What are the details I need to know about participating in the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) tournament?

  • About: The AIME is a follow-up to the AMC 10/12, designed to further challenge top scorers with a 15-question, 3-hour exam.
  • Registration Details: By invitation only, based on performance in the AMC 10/12.
  • Format: The exam consists of 15 short-answer questions, each answer is an integer between 000 and 999. A student's AIME score is calculated by the number of questions they answer correctly. There is no negative marking in AIME results. Problems increase in difficulty as the problem number increases. These questions are difficult short-answer computational problems.
  • Schedule: Typically held in March each year.
  • Entry Fee: Included as part of the progression from AMC 10/12.
  • Awards: Top performers are invited to the USA(J)MO​​.
